What does the Biobank do?
SZTE's Biobank is Hungary's first and only ISO 20387:2018 (Biotechnology — Biobanking) certified biobank. The SZTE Biobank is a member of BBMRI-ERIC (Biobanking and BioMolecular Resources Research Infrastructure - European Research Infrastructure Consortium), which brings together the biobanks of the member countries within the EU, one of the largest EU research infrastructures. In 2020, the SZTE Biobank was the first among the Hungarian biobanks to join the European organization. In 2021, the Semmelweis University, the University of Debrecen, the University of Pécs, the Dél-Pest centrumkórház, Gedeon Richter Zrt. and the University of Szeged formed BBMRI Hungary, thus virtually every Hungarian university biobank became a BBMRI member. In the management and operation of the national node, such as in BBMRI-ERIC, SZTE biobank employees hold important positions.
The SZTE Biobank coordinates, performs and develops the distribution, collection, storage and use of biobank samples collected in the various institutes of the SZTE, and acts as a kind of catalyst between industrial and academic partners. The newly established SZTE Biobank site offers complex biobanking capabilities, expertise covering the entire process of biobanking activity and a professional high-tech technological environment, primarily for professionals working in clinical diagnostics, basic and applied clinical research, oncology research, personalized medicine, as well as education /training, both in the process of research/innovation and know-how utilization.
